Methodologies and critical analysis - 13/10/15 - Notes

Research - Define the best method of research through comparison and analysis.

Consider logic, reason and critical analysis.

Methodology

Essential – evidencing the use of methodological approach.

Design your own methodology and subsequent plan to create the most appropriate responses.

Defining the most effective questions and the creating of a method to interpret the results.

Simply, a method to gain research.

Create several methodology proposals to define the most efficient and record this therefore showing critical reflection.

Evidence this on the blog. Intellectual enquiry, critical analysis, critical reflection into methodological defining and the journey into doing that.

Methodology can be compared to a point of view, each has different results and experiences of the same subject. Each has it’s own prejudices, benefits – define the most objective method.

Look at PALGRAVE STUDY SKILLS for help with defining Methodologies.

Explain why research items are the most appropriate / relevant – e.g why that library, why that journal, why journals at all? Etc

Create a research plan so soon.

Methodology reflection:
-       Predictions
-       Preconceived problems
-       Benefits
-       Negatives
-       Critical Analysis (visual and theoretical)
-       Requirements
-       Quantitative or qualitative

Explain every reason, every action, every thought process. Every reason you’re not looking at a specific thing, specific movement – this shows a great knowledge of field. Show criticality.

Change working into a process of researching, how can a practical element create results through its completion.

Methodology needs to set out in introduction (500 words max)

Research

Applying predictions to case studies to discover if hypothesis are evident.

Acknowledge limitations of methodologies and theories.

Hebdidge subcultural style.

Critical / Skeptacism / Reasoned thinking

Objective evidence which has arose through my investigation.

When researching – considering the subjectivities and context of the individual who create the work. Look for the agenda of the individual. Where were they coming form? Intellect / emotional / philosophical, political.

Context is everything.

Do this to myself – physco analyzing ones self – define my agenda and the point of view which may effect / become evident.

Talk about remix culture / theory so clean.

To what extent is the subversion of visual cultures derived from past subcultures evident in contemporary ?

Think of the best way I can interrogate the question, how can I argue, answer the question.

‘Both Hebdege and Clarke’ shows triangulation, compare opinions.

CREATE A BUZZ OF REFERENCES

Criticize the source.

What am I saying about this question – use post it note.

What is the point I’m trying to make – don’t lose sight of this FOCUS.

Thought:

Visual signifiers created through real responses to context are appropriated in contemporary design, the aesthetic is evident however the agenda is lost. Is it right to do this by contemporary designers. How are these initial, original signifiers created and how can I use the methodology to do so in contemporary practive.

Consider the perspective I may adopt – choose a perspective!!

Triangulation – throwing multiple ideas at a subject to create results – mathematical logic. Create a mean answer – an answer derived from the average of multiple. The more sources for triangulation create more refined results, stronger evidence to conclude upon.

Paragraphs, para-phrase, summary of theories all used for citation.

To do:

Look into citation techniques!

I need to define a methodology
