SUBJECTS OF CONTEXTUAL RESEARCH ALREADY UNDERTAKEN

Level 4:
Modernist practice in a commercial environment

Level 5:
Post-Modern practice within contemporary Graphic Design

AIM AND/OR OBJECTIVE OF YOUR PROPOSED C.O.P.3 PROJECT

To what extent has technology has shaped contemporary publishing?

I would like to discuss the rise of designer as creator, transcending traditional ideas of the graphic designer as an objective creator but a discussion based upon the contemporary means in which a creator is too the designer of content. How this initial action can be appropriated (if so) into a commercial environment and the subsequent effects this democratization of publishing has had upon it’s own visual language. Alongisde discussion of author as designer will arise discussion of the communication of agenda within past and contemporary publishing. I intend to apply the findings of the investigation into the production of a publishing platform covering arts, culture and fashion with the target audience of a specific contemporary youth audience.

1.     What research needs to be undertaken into the general and specific contexts of your practice?
To identify and understand the history of the relationship between technology and publishing while contextualising moments of its history with social, political and ethical discussion.
To discover and explore the development of publishing in regards to technological advances, the rise of self publishing, the commercial pressure of publishing alongside social, ethical and political agendas that have played their part in this innovation.
To investigate and analyse the relationship between publishing and new methods derived from technology. How existing and new publishing platforms have embraced and adhered to technological advances.
To investigate and analyse the visual language created as a result of technological advances in publishing as well as the effect this has had upon visual language and systems in a both commercial and non commercial environments.

2.     What approach(es) will you take and what processes, methods, materials and  tools  are to be involved in research into your practice?

(To identify and understand the history of the relationship between technology and publishing while contextualising moments of its history with social, political and ethical discussion.)

Investigating the development of publishing platforms due to technological advances and factors that have derived from this. Factors such as the dissolving of elitism within the design due to technology, subsequent visual language created from this and the contemporary means in which existing platforms have adhered to change. This can be researched through case studies, interviews and critical analysis of both past and contemporary publishing.

(To discover and explore the development of publishing in regards to technological advances, the rise of self publishing, the commercial pressure of publishing alongside social, ethical and political agendas that have played their part in this innovation.)

An investigation into the rise of agenda within design and the platforms which have harboured this, platforms created through technological advances such as social media, desktop publishing, online magazines and critical analysis of the consumption of media by a specific T.A.

(To investigate and analyse the relationship between publishing and new methods derived from technology. How existing and new publishing platforms have embraced and adhered to technological advances.)

This is to involve several case studies of contemporary and past publishing platforms, in which change has derived from changes in the contemporary consumption of media.

(To investigate and analyse the relationship between significant moments of a broad range of design (architecture, fashion, moving image) influenced by youth culture in specific context. (Past and present))

Similar to the investigation above however this will result in a broader range of research to identify any form of visual communication that has been influenced by British Youth Culture. This investigation will benefit a more specific investigation by applying an understanding the relationship between culture and product outside of the specific publishing/editorial aim.

3.     What preparation or investigations do you need to undertake for your creative practice to take place?

Before partaking in creative practice, a specific demographic / target market must be defined as well as a sufficient body of research on contemporary youth culture. This understanding will define a visual identity, cultural icons and a tone of voice to apply throughout the publication. Alongside the aesthetic, concept, agenda and affiliations will have to be considered in both content and advertisements to create a complete object.  A digital presence will be necessary (Print x Digital to be investigated in research) and is also to be considered with equal thought; the translation of print to digital has to be fluent, usability has to be representative of the brands’ energy and digital/online affiliations have to be considered.
Outside of production values, there are several other considerations that are to be applied in order to create a comprehensive preparation. Distribution plan, stockists, launch events, sponsors, affiliation with industry people, affiliations with pop culture figures, pricing, competition, commercial viability, business plan, employment, sponsorship amongst others.
Case studies of success and failure within the industry would be beneficial and could offer the opportunity of first hand research.
Above all considerations of productions and business plan, a grasp on contemporary youth culture is essential, creating a skewed version of contemporary youth culture may be beneficial in aid of creating a unique selling point.

4.     What research do you need to undertake regarding who your creativity is for?

An identification, investigation and definition of contemporary youth culture primarily will help identify Youth Culture and possible sub-cultures.
Defining a target audience/demographic will be essential to the curating of content; articles, stories and topics that are to be curated by an editor to attract a specific audience.
Researching the target audience of existing publications and online platforms will inform the defining of my own identification of a target market. Adapting upon the basis of these existing platforms could be used to define a target audience.
